Bopanna, Ebden Fall in US Open Men's Doubles Third Round

India's campaign in the men's doubles event of the US Open came to an end as Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden were eliminated in the third round.

The second-seeded pair succumbed to a 1-6 5-7 defeat at the hands of 16th seed Argentine duo Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in a 66-minute match on Sunday night.

Bopanna and Ebden had earlier clinched the Australian Open title this year, but Bopanna, 44, who has already announced his retirement from the Davis Cup, now faces questions about his return to defend the Australian Open title in 2025.

Earlier in the tournament, Sumit Nagal exited the men's singles with a first-round loss, while Yuki Bhambri and N Sriram Balaji bowed out of the men's doubles at different stages. Bopanna's challenge continues in the mixed doubles, where he and his Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi will face Ebden and Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova, the fourth seeds.
