Taylor Fritz rallied on Sunday, overcoming a sluggish start to overpower Casper Ruud 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-2 and secure a spot in the U.S. Open quarter-finals for the second straight year.
Ruud initially led, winning the first set 6-3, but Fritz capitalized on Ruud's service errors and physical discomfort in the humid New York weather. Fritz converted a crucial break to level the match in the second set when Ruud double-faulted on set point.
Despite a change of clothes and shoes, Ruud couldn't regain his earlier form, allowing Fritz to dominate the third set and clinch it with an ace. Fritz carried his momentum into the fourth set, ultimately hammering his 24th ace on match point. He will next face Alexander Zverev in a highly anticipated quarter-final match.
