World number one Jannik Sinner's bid for a second Grand Slam title gained momentum as he thumped Christopher O'Connell 6-1 6-4 6-2 on Saturday to reach the U.S. Open fourth round.
Sinner, noting the recent exit of his main rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, took an hour and 53 minutes to dispatch the 87th-ranked O'Connell. "I try to stay on my side of the net and take it day by day," Sinner remarked.
The Italian surged ahead early in the match, dominating the first set. Despite some resistance from O'Connell in the second set, Sinner clinched it with a strong crosscourt forehand. He continued to dominate, wrapping up the final set with powerful serving, including 15 aces.
