Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal is set to miss the majority of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the LaLiga club announced on Wednesday. The 17-year-old sustained the knee injury during Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano, where he was forced off the pitch late in the game.

Bernal, who had made a promising debut in Barcelona's opening day win against Valencia, also suffered an associated injury to his external meniscus. 'He will undergo surgical treatment in the coming days,' Barcelona stated.

The team is preparing to face Real Valladolid in their next LaLiga match on Saturday.
