Former Indian speedster Zaheer Khan has stepped into the new role of team mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as of Wednesday. Celebrating the appointment, Khan called it the start of something "very, very special" for the franchise, which has struggled to clinch an IPL title despite reaching the playoffs twice in three seasons.

Previously mentored by Gautam Gambhir, the team debuted in 2022 and reached successive playoffs but failed to replicate their success this season, finishing seventh. "LSG are a relatively young franchise, but their building blocks are in place," Khan mentioned during a media interaction at the RPSG Group Headquarters. He highlighted his confidence in contributing to the team's future success, noting their shared vision for the franchise.

Zaheer Khan fills the role left vacant by Gambhir, who returned to Kolkata Knight Riders before becoming head coach of the Indian national team. Khan has extensive IPL experience, having served as director of cricket for Mumbai Indians and head of global development. His comprehensive role will also include scouting and player development. Expectations are high as he takes on this new challenge.
