Representatives from eight northeastern states convened in Shillong, Meghalaya, earlier this week, sharing a vision to advance football in the region, the All India Football Association (AIFF) announced. The gathering coincided with the city's enthusiasm for the Durand Cup 2024 semi-final, where local favourites Shillong Lajong FC faced off against NorthEast United FC.

In a riveting match, NorthEast United FC triumphed over Shillong Lajong FC with a 3-0 victory, thanks to a hat-trick by Parthib Gogoi. The team will now face Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the final. Senior football officials, including Presidents and Secretaries from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, engaged in comprehensive discussions.

The meeting aimed to formulate strategies to enhance football at all levels across these states. Discussions covered grassroots initiatives, promoting women's football, and expanding beach soccer and futsal. AIFF Treasurer and Arunachal Pradesh Football Association Secretary Kipa Ajay said, 'We aim to grow football in the northeast through cooperation and communication.'

Another focal point was integrating football with local cultural events by organizing tournaments during festivals. Officials believe this will boost participation and foster community engagement. The possible revival of the Dr. T. Ao Football Tournament, a pre-COVID-19 event, was also discussed as a platform to showcase regional talent and promote the sport.
