American tennis player Tommy Paul clinched his first Olympic quarter-final spot, extinguishing France's medal hopes by defeating Corentin Moutet in a thrilling match at Roland Garros on Wednesday.

World-ranked 69, Moutet, who advanced due to Germany's Jan Lennard Struff's withdrawal, struggled against Paul's formidable serves and net precision. Despite breaking Paul's serve twice in the first set, Moutet lost 7-6(5) in the tiebreak and subsequently faltered in the second set, littered with unforced errors, to conclude at 6-3.

Though Moutet saved six match points, his persistent battle ended with a long shot, allowing Paul to advance. Paul, who made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 with a first-round exit, may meet Spain's Carlos Alcaraz next after Alcaraz's match against Roman Safiullin.
