Fiji remains on track for a third successive Olympic gold medal in rugby sevens by reaching the semifinals at the Stade de France. However, Tokyo Games silver and bronze medalists — New Zealand and Argentina — have been knocked out.
For the first time, host nation France and Australia advanced to the semifinals, while South Africa, the last team to qualify just a month ago, returned to the semis for the first time since the Rio 2016 Olympics.
In the quarterfinals on Thursday, Fiji came from behind to beat Ireland 19-15. South Africa stunned New Zealand 14-7, France defeated Argentina 26-14, and Australia shut out the United States 18-0. The semifinals on Saturday will pitch Fiji against Australia, while France faces South Africa.
