In a significant move, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) initiated discussions with the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Future Host Commission (FHC) about hosting the 2036 Olympics. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, confirmed the development in a written reply to Lok Sabha on Monday, as per a press release from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The allocation of hosting rights for the Summer Games follows a detailed process established by the IOC. The Future Host Commission (FHC) is the dedicated body that manages this. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) interested in hosting must start a dialogue with the FHC, which evolves into a Continuous Dialogue and eventually, a Targeted Dialogue with selected NOCs.

Upon completion of this dialogue, the IOC Executive Board conducts an election where members vote to award hosting rights for the specific Olympic Games. The inclusion of sports in the Olympics is determined by the IOC, which prescribes that a sport must be governed by an International Federation adhering to the Olympic Charter and practiced widely across the globe, among other criteria.

According to the IOC, unless otherwise decided by its Executive Board, the final decision occurs ideally seven years before the opening of the concerned Olympic Games or during the session that elects the host, whichever is later. (ANI)
