England's World Cup-winning former captain Eoin Morgan has thrown his weight behind the current white-ball leadership duo, Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott, despite their recent setbacks in tournament plays. Morgan believes they should continue steering the team forward.
After triumphing in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022, Buttler and Mott experienced a dramatic fall, failing to defend their 50-over World Cup in India and the T20 World Cup title in the West Indies and USA. England's 2023 World Cup campaign saw them lose six out of nine matches and nearly miss direct qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Yet Morgan remains optimistic. He pointed out that reaching the semifinals of the T20 World Cup, given the low expectations, deserves acknowledgment. Morgan also lauded the addition of legends Andrew Flintoff and Kieron Pollard to the backroom staff. Despite his previous criticism, Morgan believes Buttler and Mott should remain, with a focus on integrating younger talent like Phil Salt and Harry Brook. England's next white-ball series is against Australia in September.
