The prestigious Durand Cup, now celebrating its 133rd edition, has made a grand return to Kokrajhar, showcasing its importance to the region. The three coveted Durand Cup trophies were proudly displayed on Sunday at the Bodofa Cultural Complex, Chandamari, attended by prominent figures including Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), and Nandita Gorlosa, Assam's Minister for Power, Sports and Youth Welfare, and other departments.

The event witnessed the presence of Lieutenant General RC Srikanth, VSM, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, and Chairman of the Durand Cup Organizing Committee. Enthusiastic local support for last year's 132nd edition has led to Kokrajhar not only continuing as a host city but also earning an additional knockout game this year.

Pramod Boro welcomed all dignitaries and expressed his gratitude to the Indian Army for agreeing to host an extra match in Kokrajhar. He highlighted the significance of this gesture in strengthening civil-military relationships and conveyed his excitement for the upcoming competitive matches. Meanwhile, Nandita Gorlosa praised the leadership of local officials and the Chief Minister for enhancing Kokrajhar's football infrastructure. She encouraged the community to support their local team, Bodoland FC, and enjoy the tournament.

Lieutenant General Srikanth emphasized the unifying power of football and the Indian Army's commitment to extending the reach of the Durand Cup into the northeastern regions of India. He also announced the addition of Jamshedpur and Shillong as new host cities this year, offering more opportunities for local football enthusiasts.

Group E, featuring teams like North-East United FC, Odisha FC, the Border Security Force, and Bodoland FC, will base their matches in Kokrajhar. The tournament kicks off on July 30, 2024, with an all-Assam derby between Bodoland FC and North-East United FC at the SAI Stadium. A total of 24 teams will compete across 43 matches in four host cities, culminating in the finals at Kolkata's Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on August 31.
