Russian Wrestler Shamil Mamedov Withdraws from Paris Olympics
Shamil Mamedov, Russia's sole wrestler considering an invitation to the Paris Olympics, has decided not to participate due to a recurring injury, as reported by the national wrestling federation. Mamedov was given the freedom to decide on his participation following his bronze medal win at the 2023 world championships.
Shamil Mamedov, Russia's sole wrestler invited to the Paris Olympics, has opted out due to a recurring injury, as reported by Tass news agency via the national wrestling federation on Saturday. His decision has been communicated to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Earlier this week, the national federation had announced that Mamedov, 23, who secured a bronze medal at the 2023 world championships, was free to decide whether to compete.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to participate in Paris strictly as neutrals, devoid of flags or anthems, with additional IOC checks ensuring no military affiliations. Initially, 36 Russians were approved to compete; however, 20 have since declined, citing the conditions as humiliating.
