Tragedy in Brazil: Young Rider Lorenzo Somaschini Dies at Nine

Argentine motorbike rider Lorenzo Somaschini has died aged nine after sustaining injuries in a crash during a practice session at a junior competition in Brazil, motorcycle racing authorities said on Tuesday. Somaschini was hospitalised in Sao Paulo on Friday after crashing at the Interlagos track in a free practice for the Honda Junior Cup, one of the largest youth racing events in the region.

"Superbike Brazil informs, with great sadness and pain, of the death of rider Lorenzo Somaschini late on Monday," Superbike said in an official statement on social media. "The Argentine, born in Rosario, was admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo under intensive medical care and, unfortunately, did not survive.

"Everyone in the Superbike Brazil team is shocked by this event and expresses our sincere sorrow to all of Lorenzo's family and friends." Somaschini, known as Lolo, had made his debut in the Buenos Aires Superbike in April.

According to Diego Pierluigi, Somaschini's instructor, the accident occurred on the slowest corner of the circuit when he was going just 40 km per hour (25 miles per hour). "The fall was very slow, but Lolo hit his head on the very bottom of the helmet, in a position that caused inflammation at the base of his skull," he said.

Retired three-time MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo, whom Somaschini admired and honoured with the number 99 on his bike, sent his condolences to the young rider's family. "My heart breaks because I was his idol and he had my number. Unfortunately, motorcycles can give us everything, at any time. A very big hug to the family," the Spaniard said on Instagram.
