On Monday, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed has unveiled an environmental scheme of planting four billion trees across the nation.
The seeding of four billion trees are likely to be planted in this summer for which a ministerial committee led by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been set up to facilitate the exercise. “Over the past years Ethiopia’s forest coverage has decreased (in recent years) and the initiative is set to mobilize national reforestation at 40 trees per head,” the PM’s office took to social media to announce.
Ethiopia in recent years has highly suffered from the negative impact of climate change mainly in relation to droughts in parts of the nation. Reports indicate that in 2017, over 2 million animals died in Ethiopia due to drought because of the scarcity of rainfall, as reported by AfricaNews.
Before the official launching program, Abiy Ahmed had held talks with national agricultural transformation leaders on ways of realizing the project. The premier has made a public appeal for Ethiopians from all walks of life to champion the National Green Development project to be implemented during the upcoming rainy season across the country.
This is the second national re-afforestation project. The first was held ten years ago when it celebrated its 2nd millennium.
