Tensions Rise: Ethiopia and Eritrea on the Brink of Conflict

The longstanding adversaries, Ethiopia and Eritrea, could be heading towards renewed conflict, signaling a potential humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. Tensions have arisen following recent events in Ethiopia's Tigray region, a site of conflict from 2020 to 2022.

Discontent stems from a 2022 peace deal that excluded Eritrea, leading to internal divisions within Tigray. A dissident faction recently took control of Adigrat, accusing authorities of compromising Tigrayan interests. Eritrea and Ethiopia have conducted military deployments, exacerbating fears of direct conflict.

Historical animosity traces back to Eritrea's independence in 1993 and a subsequent war over border disputes. Despite a 2018 reconciliation, relations soured after Ethiopia and the TPLF penned a peace agreement, leaving Eritrea sidelined. This volatile situation threatens to destabilize the region once more.
