Union Minister Jitendra Singh revealed that India's nuclear scientists are focusing on three new reactor technologies, marking a significant step toward deploying small modular reactors (SMRs) within the next decade.
Singh, who serves as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences, reported to the Rajya Sabha that efforts are geared towards developing 200 MW and 55 MW Pressurised Water Reactors along with a 5 MW Indian Gas Cooled Reactor. This initiative aims to facilitate a series of Bharat Small Reactors to support India's green energy objectives.
The government targets producing 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047, as outlined in the Union Budget. Singh emphasized the plans to construct prototype demonstration reactors, crucial for refining the technology required for their design, construction, and operation ahead of full-scale commercial deployment. Moreover, the government has allocated Rs 20,000 crore in the Union Budget-2025 to develop five indigenous SMRs by 2033.
