South Korea is grappling with one of its worst wildfire crises, as fierce flames continue to ravage its southern regions. Among the affected areas is Uiseong, where a helicopter pilot tragically lost his life in a crash while attempting to combat the blazes. The deadly fires have already claimed 24 lives, destroyed more than 200 structures, and displaced 27,000 residents, according to official reports.
In a televised address, acting President Han Duck-soo warned that the current wildfires are causing far more damage than many past incidents. With winds fueling the relentless spread of flames overnight, authorities are deploying over 4,650 emergency responders, including firefighters and soldiers, with around 130 helicopters to battle the blazes. Despite determined efforts, challenges persist due to the weather conditions.
Notably, the fires have decimated parts of the Gounsa temple, an ancient site that houses significant cultural treasures, including structures dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. Speculation over the cause of the fires points to possible human error. The Korea Forest Service has elevated the wildfire warning to its highest level, pressing local authorities to intensify response measures and tighten forest access restrictions.
