Communities Unite for Firewise Solutions in Hawaii
Hawaiian communities embark on a Firewise journey to combat escalating wildfire threats, sparked by climate change and urban development. By fostering defensible spaces and implementing strategic, cost-effective fire risk mitigation strategies, these neighborhoods enhance their resilience and rally for essential support, showcasing a model for other fire-prone areas.

In response to increasing wildfire threats posed by climate change and urban growth, Hawaiian communities are actively embracing Firewise initiatives. These programs are crucial as these areas deal with unmanaged fallow lands and limited evacuation routes, greatly increasing their fire risks.
Driven by urgency and community spirit, residents of Kahikinui have cleared 12 tons of waste to establish 'defensible spaces' around their homes. The proactive measures aid in reducing ignition risks, significantly enhancing neighborhood resilience. Supported by the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, communities are stepping forward and spearheading their own transformation.
A key insight from fire scientist Dr. Jack Cohen is that local action around homes can vastly improve fire safety. Communities cannot rely solely on external factors; rather, engagement and joint efforts, such as those seen in Firewise programs, are essential for safeguarding neighborhoods against wildfires.
