The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has introduced a localized weather forecasting system for the Sabarimala pilgrimage, a first of its kind, following a request from the Pathanamthitta district administration.
IMD has set up three rain gauges to provide three-day weather forecasts, which will soon evolve into real-time updates or 'nowcasts,' according to Neetha K Gopal, IMD's regional director. This development is vital given the area's vulnerability to extreme weather, including landslides.
Coordination between the IMD and district authorities aims to integrate these forecasts into the 'Swamy AI Chat Bot' app, offering pilgrims important weather updates. This follows severe flooding in 2018, underscoring the need for enhanced safety measures in the region.
