The National Green Tribunal has raised concerns over the negative impact of tourism and tunneling projects on the Himalayan brown bear's habitat in Kashmir's Sonamarg. An extensive report by the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee highlights the detrimental effects of unplanned waste disposal and increased human activities in the area.
According to findings, a significant portion of the bears' diet comprises human-generated waste, such as plastic and organic food. The committee has been urged to assess the impact of tourism and the adequacy of waste management practices. Sonamarg, while being an important tourist stop and pilgrimage route, faces severe environmental challenges.
The panel's report indicates that tourism infrastructure developments, like hotels and roads, have fragmented the bear's habitat. The Sonamarg Development Authority is under scrutiny for improper waste management, with heaps of untreated waste evident. Recommendations include better waste quantification, secured facilities, and stricter enforcement of environmental protocols.
