In a remarkable gathering, three hundred surfers aged over 50 converged in Santos, Brazil, aiming to set a new world record by riding the same wave together. The event, organized by a local surf school focusing on older adults, underscored the blend of sport and community.
Christiane Melin, one of the participants, shared her passion for the sport, saying, "I had a crazy desire to learn to surf and once I started, I couldn’t stop. It’s an addiction...but an addiction that’s really good." Despite not breaking the record, the event's emphasis on well-being and social connection was evident.
Fueled by the community spirit post-pandemic, Cisco Arana, the event organizer, highlighted the importance of unity. Though the group fell short of the existing record, participants like Marco Horta echoed sentiments of joy and transformation, noting how surfing fostered new friendships and combated challenges like depression.
