During Diwali, Ranchi witnessed a substantial increase in sound pollution, with the silence zones experiencing levels of 74.65 dB, well above the permissible limit. The Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board recorded a significant rise from pre-Diwali levels.
In commercial areas like Albert Ekka Chowk, noise levels surged by 21.71 per cent, breaching the allowed daytime limit of 60 dB. Despite a ban on high-decibel crackers, violations persisted, indicating inadequate enforcement.
The city's air quality also declined sharply, with alarming PM-10 and PM-2.5 readings far exceeding safe levels. The data highlights the environmental challenges posed by festive celebrations.
