Kong-rey's Roar: Taiwan Battens Down as Monster Typhoon Hits

Typhoon Kong-rey, a formidable Category 4 storm, unleashed its fury on Taiwan's east coast on Thursday, leading to shutdowns of cities, financial markets, and cancellations of hundreds of flights. This marks the largest typhoon by size to hit the island in 30 years, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration.

Despite losing some strength overnight, Kong-rey remains a potent force, with winds exceeding 250 kph. President Lai Ching-te took to social media, urging citizens to avoid risky behaviors, while forecasters predict it will weaken as it moves toward the Taiwan Strait, though high winds remain a threat.

Efforts are underway to mitigate environmental risks, especially concerning a beached Chinese cargo ship. Meanwhile, defense and rescue teams are on alert, with over a thousand people evacuated from high-risk zones. Major industries, including the chipmaking giant TSMC, have activated precautionary measures, maintaining that operations remain largely unaffected.
