Super Typhoon Kong-rey: Taiwan Braces for Biggest Storm in Decades
Taiwan braces for Super Typhoon Kong-rey, set to make landfall on Thursday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. This massive storm is the largest since 1996, prompting warnings and closures. Authorities urge caution as rainfall and winds could be devastating, affecting coastal and mountainous regions.
Taiwan is on high alert as Super Typhoon Kong-rey approaches its east coast, set to make landfall on Thursday. The nation foresees heavy rainfall and devastating winds from the largest storm to hit the island in nearly 30 years.
The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center reports that the storm has intensified into a super typhoon with winds topping 300 kph (186 mph). As a result, financial markets in Taipei will close, and residents are urged to avoid high-risk areas.
The anticipated route will take the typhoon across Taiwan's south and into China. Taiwan's defense ministry has stationed 36,000 troops in readiness, while domestic flights and numerous ferry services have been cancelled.
