Punjab has recorded 2,356 farm fire incidents this season, marking a significant 55% decrease from last year. The state aims to curb air pollution caused by stubble burning, which is especially prevalent in districts like Ferozepur, Sangrur, and Patiala during the post-harvest period.

In a significant development, Punjab has seen a 55% drop in farm fire incidents compared to the previous year. Official data reveals that 2,356 cases have been reported this season as opposed to 5,254 in the same period last year. The trend suggests improved management practices and awareness among farmers.
The Punjab Remote Sensing Centre data highlights that 219 fresh farm fires were recorded on Tuesday alone, with the maximum incidents observed in Ferozepur, Sangrur, and Patiala. This reduction in farm fires has contributed positively to air quality conditions, crucial as Delhi battles pollution spikes each year.
Despite these efforts, the rapid clearing of paddy fields for wheat sowing continues to push some farmers towards stubble burning as a quick solution. With 31 lakh hectares of paddy fields, the state generates an overwhelming 180-200 lakh tonnes of paddy straw annually, posing ongoing challenges in agricultural waste management.
