Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar unveiled a series of flood relief initiatives in Bengaluru, addressing the city's stormwater management crisis. A major focus will be on the swift removal of stormwater drain encroachments to prevent future flooding incidents.
As part of the relief efforts, families of victims, including two children who drowned in Kengeri lake, will receive compensation from the BBMP, while Rs 10,000 will be provided to owners of flood-damaged homes. The government is also arranging temporary housing and food for the displaced.
These actions are supported by a Rs 1,000 crore World Bank loan aimed at desilting drains and lakes. Shivakumar emphasized the urgency, dismissing legal hurdles as secondary to citizen safety. The Deputy Commissioner of BBMP has been instructed to enforce these measures without delay.
