Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district is set to play a crucial role in cushioning the blow of cyclone Dana, predicted to strike between late Thursday and early Friday. The mangrove forest, stretching across 200 square km, promises to offset the cyclone's potential devastation.

The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts Dana to land with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 110 kmph. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Susanta Nanda, noted, "The mangroves are a relief for Odisha, reducing the coastline's vulnerability to tidal surges." The forest also helps decrease wind velocity impacts.

In anticipation of cyclone-induced disruptions, five forest department teams are poised to clear debris. Additionally, crocodile distress teams are ready, given potential movement into human habitats post-cyclone. Authorities have established a control room and secured patrolling boats as a precaution.
