India is seeing significant progress in its nuclear energy sector, with at least 10 reactors currently in installation phases, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology was informed. Notably, commercial power is already being generated by two reactors at Kakrapar in Gujarat.

The new nuclear reactors, envisioned for states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana, boast a capacity of 700 MW and are expected to be operational within the coming years, according to committee insiders. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared that the Kakrapar-3 and Kakrapar-4 reactors are successfully integrated into the national grid, showcasing the benefits of indigenous design.

Ramesh, however, also drew attention to the challenges facing public sector enterprises, citing Central Electronics Limited's (CEL) fluctuating fortunes. Initially condemned, CEL was on the verge of being sold, a move later reversed by the government due to controversies. Ramesh's commentary highlights ongoing debates over the treatment of public sector companies since 2014.
