Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is on alert as authorities issue a flood warning due to a glacial lake outburst at Suicide Basin. This side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier has been releasing floods annually since 2011, impacting areas along Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River.

The National Weather Service has indicated that residents have between 24 to 36 hours to prepare for moderate flooding expected to peak early Monday. With water levels forecast to crest at 3.35 to 3.5 meters, Nicole Serrin, a meteorologist, warns locals to avoid the river due to slippery conditions caused by recent snow.

In addition, around 100 homes faced damage during a previous flooding incident in August, setting new records for water levels in the Mendenhall Valley. Juneau, a city accessed only by plane or boat, is preparing for potential impacts as the basin refills unpredictably with seasonal rains and snowmelt.
