As Delhi's air quality worsened to the 'poor' category on Wednesday, the Centre opted to closely monitor the situation before enacting anti-pollution measures under Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 235, pushing it into the 'poor' category by 4 PM.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Sub-Committee, responsible for executing GRAP, reviewed the current air quality and weather projections from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). They noted an improvement, with the AQI dropping to 232 by 5 PM and light rain expected to further enhance air quality.

The Sub-Committee decided to monitor the air quality for another day or more before initiating Stage 1 actions. A statement confirmed continuous observation would precede further decisions.

Last week, the CAQM announced a significant change to GRAP. Buses from NCR states will be barred from entering Delhi if AQI hits Stage III ('Severe'). Exceptions include CNG, BS VI, and electric buses, along with tempo travellers with an all-India tourist permit.

Stage 1 of GRAP requires strict enforcement of Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal orders on phasing out older diesel and petrol vehicles. It also bans coal and firewood in eateries once AQI surpasses 200.

GRAP stages range from 'Poor' (AQI 201-300) to 'Severe Plus' (AQI >450).
