Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday stated that India should be acknowledged for its low per capita emissions rather than being labeled as a major greenhouse gas emitter.
Speaking at the Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Yadav noted that while India houses 17 per cent of the global population, it accounts for less than 5 per cent of global carbon emissions. In stark contrast, developed nations with a similar combined population contribute to 60 per cent of emissions.
Yadav emphasized the principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities' in climate negotiations, underscoring that developed countries must take larger steps given their historical emissions and greater capacities. He highlighted India's focus on a low-carbon development path, balancing national developmental needs with environmental responsibilities.
