The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved 'Mission Mausam', a Rs 2,000 crore initiative to boost India's capability in predicting and responding to extreme weather events and climate change.

The mission will be driven by the India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, with support from other MoES bodies. It will focus on enhanced observations and highly accurate, timely weather and climate information.

Key elements include advanced radar systems, supercomputers, and cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to benefit multiple sectors and improve decision-making in urban planning and disaster management, further strengthening resilience against climate change impacts.
