The Czech Republic is currently facing extreme rainfall and flooding, with the weather expected to worsen over the next four days. Weather forecasters have predicted that some areas might experience more than a third of their annual rainfall. The low-pressure area and cold front impacting central and eastern Europe will also affect Austria, Poland, and Slovakia.

The most severe weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rains, are expected to peak on Saturday. Environment Minister Petr Hladik emphasized the potential danger, warning that strong winds might topple trees and pose risks to lives and properties. He also mentioned the likelihood of flash floods, especially in areas where they are not typically anticipated.

In preparation, water management authorities are proactively releasing water from dams to increase retention capacity. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Marek Vybory reported that regional and local authorities have been mobilized for anti-flood measures. The severity of the situation has prompted Czech authorities to deny a German request to reduce water discharge through the Elbe River, following a bridge collapse in Dresden.

The Czech weather institute noted that the northeastern Jeseniky mountains could receive up to 400 millimeters of rain, coupled with high winds. Most of the region east of Prague is under an extreme risk rain warning, while Prague and western regions also face a lower-level flood warning. Other neighboring countries, including Austria and Slovakia, have also issued warnings of heavy rain and storms.
