A depression over the Bay of Bengal is poised to escalate into a deep depression by Monday, prompting heavy rain in numerous districts in southern West Bengal until September 12, according to the Met office.

The system is anticipated to make landfall between the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, specifically between Puri and Digha, by Monday night, as reported on Sunday.

Significant rainfall is forecasted for south Bengal districts including Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum until September 12.

Kolkata and its adjoining areas, such as Howrah and Hooghly districts, should prepare for light to moderate rainfall, added the weather office.

Fishermen have been cautioned to stay clear of the Bay of Bengal, particularly along the Odisha-West Bengal coasts, through September 11 due to anticipated hazardous sea conditions with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph.
