The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has announced plans to replace the blinding LED lamps on the Nerul Jetty road with yellow bulbs to reduce light pollution affecting the DPS Flamingo Lake, a sanctuary that hosts pink migratory birds.

An official revealed on Wednesday that CIDCO, the planning authority for Navi Mumbai, has recently issued a tender for the replacement project.

The Thane creek township, known for its annual influx of migratory flamingos, has seen several bird deaths allegedly caused by disorientation from bright lights. Bird enthusiasts and environmental activists earlier this year reported that seven flamingos crashed into a giant signboard for the passenger water transport terminal.

B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation, emphasized that a further ten birds died this year due to light disorientation, compounded by a lack of food when the DPS Flamingo Lake dried up following the blockage of intertidal water flow. Kumar expressed hope that the lake would be ready to welcome the flamingos during the next season starting in October.
