The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog engaged in talks with senior officials in Ukraine on Tuesday to address safety concerns at Europe's largest nuclear power plant. Rafael Mariano Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made his 10th visit to the country since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022.

Grossi reported on social media platform X that he was heading to Zaporizhzhia to prevent a nuclear disaster. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under Russian control since their full-scale invasion in 2022. Recent artillery shelling damaged the plant's power access, leading plant operator Energoatom to accuse Russia of the attacks.

Energoatom warned that further damage could lead to an emergency, as technicians are unable to make repairs due to continued shelling threats. While an explosion at Zaporizhzhia would emit radiation, experts suggest the risk beyond the immediate vicinity would be lower than the catastrophic 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Still, the ongoing conflict jeopardizes the region's nuclear safety.
