Paddy cultivation in the Kharif sowing season has surged by 4%, covering 408.72 lakh hectares, thanks to favorable monsoon rains, government data reveals.

Last year, paddy acreage was 393.57 lakh hectares in the same period.

An official statement highlights that pulses acreage rose to 125.13 lakh hectares this season, compared to 116.66 lakh hectares last year. Coarse cereals cover 187.74 lakh hectares, up from 181.06 lakh hectares last year.

In non-food grains, oilseeds have increased to 190.63 lakh hectares this year, compared to 188.83 lakh hectares previously.

Sugarcane coverage stands at 57.68 lakh hectares, marginally higher than last year's 57.11 lakh hectares. Overall, total area coverage for this Kharif season is 1,087.33 lakh hectares, surpassing last year's 1,066.89 lakh hectares.
