Tropical Storm Yagi, locally known as Enteng, wreaked havoc in the Philippines on Monday, bringing heavy rains that resulted in floods and a deadly landslide, killing seven people. The capital Manila and nearby provinces were severely affected, with the disaster agency reporting casualties and submerged homes.
In Antipolo, a landslide-prone area east of Manila, the calamity claimed the lives of three individuals: two schoolboys and a 27-year-old pregnant woman. "We have been urging residents to relocate for a long time," said Relly Bernardo, Antipolo's disaster management chief, on DWPM radio. Four other individuals drowned in separate incidents in Rizal province, emphasizing the widespread impact of the storm.
The Philippines typically faces around 20 tropical storms annually, and Yagi's devastation calls attention to the recurring threat. Streets and homes were inundated, leading to the suspension of government operations and classes. Winds reached speeds of up to 85 kph, with gusts topping 105 kph, as the storm moved northwest across Luzon, the most populous island in the country.
