The Kerala government has taken significant steps to aid survivors of the catastrophic Wayanad landslides, which tragically killed over 200 people last July. On Wednesday, the cabinet sanctioned the establishment of two townships aimed at providing a humane and sustainable living environment for those affected.

According to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who addressed the media, the townships will be constructed on chosen plantation estates in Kalpetta and Kottappady. These locations will include all the basic amenities needed for community living, such as housing, schools, health centers, and sanitation facilities, amongst others.

The project, underpinned by a three-tier implementation strategy overseen by a chief minister-led panel, incorporates a diverse range of livelihood options and seeks inclusive participation, inviting aid and assistance from various quarters to rebuild the lives of those impacted by the disaster.
