In a notable first for India, over 400 scientists from around the globe have converged at IIT Madras for the International Congress on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC), starting Tuesday.

This prestigious conference, typically held in Europe and the US, is being hosted by IIT Madras in collaboration with several Indian scientific societies. ''This conference has always been held in Europe and the US. It is for the first time that the ICTAC is being held in India,'' said Ranjit K Verma, president of the Indian Council of Chemists and chairman of the National Organising Committee.

Thermal analysis, a field that has revolutionized material science, food science, pharmaceutical sciences, and various other disciplines, will be the focus of over 400 research papers, including oral and poster presentations. ''Before launching any product to use, from the outer sheet of a spacecraft and aircraft to structural material and explosives in defence, one needs to see the impact of thermal analysis,'' added Verma.

According to Prof Ramesh Gardas of IIT Madras, the conference will feature more than 45 invited lectures, five industry presentations, plenaries, and award lectures.
