The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday demolished about 45 shanties in Southeast Delhi's Okhla as part of an anti-encroachment drive, according to officials.
While some residents alleged insufficient time was given to remove belongings, the civic body maintained that vacation notices were issued on August 27.
The demolition unfolded in the JJ cluster in Okhla's Phase 2 amidst tight security measures. An official stated that the encroachment removal was aided by police forces, clearing about 45 jhuggis from the service lane's right of way.
Residents, however, expressed frustration, saying they have lived in the area for many years and were not given adequate time. One local, Dheeraj, described the sudden arrival of bulldozers and claimed over 50 shanties were razed. Another resident, Anil Kumar, mentioned that families had lived there for 40 years.
Police confirmed that substantial security personnel were on hand to ensure order during the demolition. The MCD has been intensifying anti-encroachment efforts citywide as directed by court orders.
