Typhoon Shanshan unleashed torrential rain and powerful winds on southern Japan Thursday, resulting in at least three fatalities as it began to traverse the archipelago, sparking concerns over flooding, landslides, and wide-ranging damage.
The typhoon made landfall in the morning on Kyushu island, where parts of Miyazaki prefecture saw 60 cm of rain—exceeding the region's August average rainfall. Swollen rivers and the threat of flooding added to the urgency.
Rescue operations were underway as dozens were injured, and power outages affected nearly a quarter million households. Precautions were taken, including flight and train cancellations and government officials warning of potentially unprecedented impact.
