A multi-disciplinary team will conduct a detailed study of five high-risk glacial lakes in Mangan district of Sikkim, a senior state government official said.

The team will assess the susceptibility of lakes Khangchung Choo, Gurudongmar Lakes A, B, C, and Shako Chu, according to Sikkim's Science and Technology department secretary, Sandeep Tambe.

The initiative aims to mitigate the risks of glacial lake outburst floods, following a deadly flood in October 2023 that claimed over 70 lives.
