Multi-Disciplinary Team to Study High-Risk Glacial Lakes in Sikkim's Mangan District

A multi-disciplinary team, including various government departments, will study five high-risk glacial lakes in Sikkim's Mangan district. The study aims to assess and mitigate hazards associated with these lakes through a comprehensive four-step approach. This initiative follows a deadly glacial lake outburst flood in October 2023.

A multi-disciplinary team will conduct a detailed study of five high-risk glacial lakes in Mangan district of Sikkim, a senior state government official said.

The team will assess the susceptibility of lakes Khangchung Choo, Gurudongmar Lakes A, B, C, and Shako Chu, according to Sikkim's Science and Technology department secretary, Sandeep Tambe.

The initiative aims to mitigate the risks of glacial lake outburst floods, following a deadly flood in October 2023 that claimed over 70 lives.
