A portion of the false ceiling of a flat in a heavily deteriorated seven-storey building collapsed in Thane city, Maharashtra, just after midnight on Wednesday, according to local civic officials.

The incident occurred at 12:42 AM in the 40-year-old Sainath Kripa building, located in Thane (East), said Yasin Tadvi, head of Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the ceiling collapsed while the flat's occupants were asleep.

Local fire brigade and regional disaster management cell team members promptly arrived on the scene to clear the debris.

Last month, the civic body issued a demolition notice for the building, categorized as 'most dangerous' (C-1). Despite this, 6-7 families still reside in the 32-tenement building. Civic officials are expected to take further action to address the situation.
