Marathwada Dams Face Severe Water Shortages Amid Monsoon Lull

Three major dams in Marathwada are reporting zero per cent water storage nearly 40 days into the monsoon season. The Majalgaon, Manjara, and Sina Kolegaon dams are experiencing critical shortages. The Jayakwadi dam is also at a significantly low capacity, while Vishnupuri dam shows a healthier water level.

Almost 40 days into the monsoon season, a stark water shortage is affecting the Marathwada region, as three of its major dams report zero per cent water storage, according to a recent report from the divisional commissioner's office.

The dams in crisis include Majalgaon and Manjara in Beed, along with Sina Kolegaon in Dharashiv. Last year on this date, their water storage levels were 16.28 per cent, 3.24 per cent, and -14.45 per cent, respectively.

The situation is equally dire for the Jayakwadi dam, the largest in the region, which now holds only 4.13 per cent of its water capacity, a dramatic decrease from the 27.65 per cent reported last year. This is troubling as Jayakwadi is a crucial water source for industries and urban areas in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna. On a brighter note, the Vishnupuri dam in Nanded has a healthier water storage level at 70 per cent, up from last year's 53.61 per cent.
