In a significant move to green the national capital, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) announced on Saturday that it has successfully planted 50,000 trees and 550,000 shrubs in the 2024-25 fiscal year so far.

The DDA stated that it continues its longstanding practice of greening Delhi by organizing numerous plantation drives and awareness campaigns with the onset of the monsoon season, engaging local communities, schoolchildren, and public representatives in these efforts.

Recent initiatives include a plantation drive in Dwarka at the DDA's Sector-19B housing development complex, and similar activities at District Park and Lake in G17, Paschim Vihar. The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign was also held at the District Park Vikaspuri.

Other notable efforts include a recent plantation programme at DDA's Jahanpanah City Forest with the help of school students, and a tree plantation drive at Kalindi Aviral Extension aimed at restoring the Yamuna Floodplains and District Park Sheesh Mahal Shalimar Bagh.

With around 733 parks, seven biodiversity parks, the Yamuna floodplains, and various roadside greens under its maintenance, the DDA plays a crucial role in preserving Delhi's green cover. ''Every monsoon season, the DDA plants a significant number of native trees and shrubs to expand the city's green areas. For the financial year 2024-25, we have set a target of 11 lakh plants, including 94,000 trees and 10 lakh shrubs, and have already achieved nearly 55% of this target,'' the agency revealed.

The DDA manages 21,552 acres of green cover in Delhi, with 10,490 acres under its direct supervision. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the DDA planted more than 8.8 lakh trees and shrubs, setting the stage for its ongoing green initiatives.
