In a tragic incident at a construction site in Balmatta, a worker was killed and another critically injured when loose soil collapsed on them, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The calamity occurred around 12:30 pm as Chandan (30) and Raj Kumar (18), both from Bihar, were engaged in foundational work. A 20-foot-deep pit became their trap when a section of the soil gave way.
Quick response teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Fire Department managed to rescue Raj Kumar, who is now in a local hospital. Sadly, Chandan did not survive the ordeal despite several hours of intense rescue efforts.
Senior officials, including Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan and Commissioner of Police Anupam Agarwal, supervised the rescue operations on site. Marine engineers raised alarms about the safety protocols amid claims that the coastal region's loose, porous laterite soil heightens excavation risks.
