Heavy rains lashed several areas in Gujarat on Sunday, severely impacting normal life in cities including Ahmedabad and Surat. Water-logging was widespread, with Palsana taluka in Surat district receiving 153 mm of rainfall, the highest in the state, in just ten hours.

The torrential downpour disrupted traffic movement in Surat, Bhuj, Vapi, Bharuch, and Ahmedabad, inundating low-lying areas and rendering roads and underpasses inaccessible, according to officials.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the wet spell will continue for the next four days in Gujarat. Between 6 am and 4 pm on Sunday, as many as 43 talukas recorded more than 40 mm of rainfall, with Palsana taluka receiving 153 mm, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC).

Bardoli, Surat city, Kamrej, and Mahuva in Surat district also witnessed heavy rainfall in triple digits at 135 mm, 123 mm, 120 mm, and 119 mm, respectively, within ten hours.

Other affected areas included Vapi in Valsad district with 117 mm, Olpad in Surat with 116 mm, Valsad taluka with 102 mm, Kaprada in Valsad with 90 mm, Khergam in Navsari with 88 mm, Bharuch taluka with 86 mm, Dharampur in Valsad with 73 mm, and Morbi taluka with 72 mm.

Ahmedabad city recorded 62 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 4 pm, causing significant waterlogging in various areas.

The IMD attributed the wet spell to cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea adjoining the Saurashtra region. Heavy rains are expected in isolated places in south and central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region over the next two days. Valsad and Navsari districts in south Gujarat, and Banaskantha district in north Gujarat, are expected to receive substantial rainfall on July 3 and 4.
