The carcass of a five-foot-long saltwater crocodile was discovered floating in the Brahmani river within Bhitarkanika National Park, located in Kendrapara district, Odisha, officials stated on Wednesday.
Upon spotting the deceased crocodile, local residents immediately notified the park's forest officials. Responding swiftly, a team of forest officers retrieved the carcass for further investigation, confirmed Manas Das, the assistant conservator of forest (ACF) of the park.
"We have sent the carcass to the veterinary office for an autopsy. The exact cause of death will be determined following the autopsy report," he added.
Saltwater crocodiles are protected under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
According to the reptile census report of January 2024, Bhitarkanika National Park is home to 1,811 saltwater crocodiles.
