Nineteen-year-old Devasya Desai from Haridwar has engineered a groundbreaking microcontroller-based modular device for monitoring air quality. Devasya, a computer science student at Ahmedabad University and alumnus of Dev Sanskriti Vishwa Vidyalaya, developed the device using power-efficient ESP32 microcontrollers, making it scalable to incorporate advanced sensors for precise measurement of various air parameters.

The device measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, gas content, and particulate matter, offering flexibility to add sensors for further in-depth analysis. Devasya noted, 'The high cost and reliance on WiFi or cellular networks limit traditional air quality monitoring systems, especially in resource-constrained areas.'

His device uses the LoRaWAN protocol, enabling data transmission over long distances. The outdoor module collects and transmits data to an indoor lab module via LoRaWAN, making the system ideal for harsh and remote northern areas.
